RT: Lassen National Volcanic Park

After leaving our lap of luxury set up in Sonora we headed up to Lassen National Volcanic Park which was north of Sacramento. It was by far the longest drive of the trip but it was well worth it since we saw some cool hot springs!

There were these cool rocks with steam coming out of them but unfortantely it smelt like rotten eggs! You really couldn’t see the water besides when it would spit up through the rock hole.

Oh and there were these great signs by all the hot springs to make sure tourists didn’t get too close to the springs.

Besides the hot springs there wasn’t too much else to see in this park but it was definitely less touristy then Yosemite which was great! I would definitely come back here if we had more time to hike, it was beautiful.

Since Will & Casey live so close to Yosemite we stopped by and hung out with them for the night. It was great to get some time in with them before the baby arrived. We enjoyed a night of great conversation and good eats at a fancy Sonora restaurant.

Mack didn’t seemed to be phased by the extra people in the house, hopefully that holds true for when the baby arrives. =)

After leaving San Francisco the next morning we headed out to Yosemite National Park. We were making great time until we came in contact with “the braker!” This darn car was constantly braking all the way into Yosemite on a one lane highway. If I could have passed this car I totally would but being a windy one laner we had to grin ‘n bare it.

We stopped at all the major touristy spots but unluckily a lot of the water destinations were dried up like the water fall above. When I first came to Yosemite a few years ago in the spring this waterfall was so mighty I couldn’t get this close to snap a photo.

But some sights weren’t effected by the dry climate. This is Half Dome which you can actually climb up in a short 13+ mile hike. Michelle & I decided to pass this time but we don’t feel we missed out on anything, well besides some blistery feet. Also, when we visited the park they were fighting a huge wild fire so there was a haze that covered the whole park but it didn’t limit our fun at all. =)

I forgot about this one. There was a little wood village outside the drive thru tree that we had some fun with.

Michelle scared the bear!

After touring around the city for a bit we headed over to the pier to get in line for our Alcatraz tour. We all got audio tour headsets so we looked like big geeks walking around but at least everyone was in the same boat. My favorite part was seeing the small cells they had to live in for years on end!

Oh and taking a picture behind the bars!

And here’s Michelle’s shot!

Alcatraz had a great view of San Fran but it was very cold and quite windy! After leaving Alcatraz we headed back to my car so we could meet up with an old espner that was putting us up for the night. I was really looking forward to not sleeping in a tent and having real food! All this driving was starting to catch up with me.

We finally made it down to San Francisco after a long morning of driving. We had a reservation to take the Alcatrez tour so we didn’t want to be late! This is a photo of us crossing over the Golden Gate Bridge!

On our way down to San Francisco we saw this grove sign! Massachusetts people are every where and so giving! It was a beautiful grove! As mass holes ourselves, we had to stop and capture this touching moment. =)

After setting up our tent in the dark on day 3 we woke up the next morning before most the birds awoke. A short drive down the road was a tree so HUGE I could drive my car through it! Since it was the butt crack of the morning we had to pay by the honor system. This is me dropping my money in like the honest person I am. =)

We got our $4 worth since Michelle & I drove throught the tree a few times to make sure we got great photos and we figured why not since we were the only ones around.

This was the view of the tree from the drivers window!

Here’s me driving through!

Michelle with no hands!

The Shrine tree was a lesser known one but still as cool!! I still can’t believe there are trees large enough to drive a car through! So cool! I recommend doing it if you ever get the chance!

We were tipped off by my sister-in-law Casey to keep an eye out for Paul Bunyan and Babe his blue ox before we reached the Mystery of Trees. We reached it right before closing and were able to get a bunch of great shots with Paul & Babe.

This guy was huge! Look how small Michelle is while sitting on his foot.

Oh and then there’s me!

After our fun with Paul & Babe we ran into the gift store real quick to see if there were any good souvenirs. Little did I know Michelle was going to fall in love in there…

but luckily it was a quick romance. We were on the road shortly after without big foot, probably because he wouldn’t fit with all our other crap.

Humbug Mountain was the largest mountain to rise from the ocean in the lower 48 states. We decided to do a hike up it in hopes of getting so pretty views.

This was the best shot we got and this wasn’t even from the tippity top. We hurried to the bottom because it was getting late and we still had lots of driving to do before we got to our next campsite.

But of course we had to get a couple of fun photos before jumping back into the car. Luckily we didn’t see any bears but it’s always fun to pretend.
